Report from the Northlands
Labor Day Weekend visits to the southern Colorado
- NMMS members who visited La Manga Pass (10,000 ft) reported that it appears the season is at an end. Although there has been abundant rainfall, freezing nighttime temperatures are bringing the fruiting season to an end. There were a few remaining chanterelles, but not a bolete to be found. One member found an impressive batch of late-season Auricularia auricula (wood ears). Whoopee!
- David & Terri Wallis visited further west in the San Juan Mountains (8500 ft) and report frosty mornings and even a slight dusting of snow above 9000 ft. There was still a good assortment of small gilled mushrooms, but no boletes. To put the weekend in perspective, probably the most exciting find was as small crop of Psilocybe coprophila--which we usually associate with cowpies--growing out of horse dung. Mycology doesn't get much better than that.
