Jemez Location of Amanita rubescens (?)
+35.9710-106.6350/2680 (nad27)

Directions:

La Cueva is at the intersection of NM Hwys 4 & 126.
* From La Cueva, travel west on Hwy 128 toward Fenton Lake.
* At the top of Fenton Hill, turn right (north) on FR 144.
* Travel approx 8 miles north on FR 144.

Although it winds a bit, FR 144 heads more or less north-northeast. About 7 miles from its intersection with Hwy 126, FR 144 curves to the west.

* About a mile after this curve, there is an old logging road which takes off to the left (south). (The road is not easy to see until you're right next to it, so you have to watch carefully.) Turn on the old road or park near the intersection.

The old road heads south for 100 meters or so and then heads west parallel to FR 144. Between FR 144 and the logging road is a slight gully with lots of downed timber (mostly small trees).

* The Amanita rubescens were growing about 40-50 meters south of FR 144 and about the same distance west of the north-south portion of the logging road. The trees are mixed deciduous and conifer, and the substrate is mixed leaf and needle duff.

Notes:

  • The species is probably not A.rubescens. During Steve Trudell's visit in August'05, he suggested that it is closer to A.novinupta.
  • This area hosts a variety of habitats and an interesting diversity of fungi.
