Field Trip Report
East side of Sandias near Doc Long's
Saturday, 23 April 2005
  • We set out from the Cienega Spring trailhead at 08:00, walked along Faulty Trail to Cole Spring, and returned along roughly the same route, visiting portions of Caņoncito and Armijo Canyons on the way back.
  • Length and duration of the trip was 10 miles in 10 hours.
  • Streams were flowing vigorously in Cienega & Armijo Canyons. Between Caņoncito and Cole Springs is a small canyon which is un-named on maps and usually dry, but had a surprising amount of water flowing in it as well.
  • The streams below Caņoncito and Cole Springs seemed to have no more water that usual.
  • There were some concentrations of ascomycetes, but generally they were spread out along a good portion of our route.
  • Stream beds were not significantly more productive than other areas.
  • Moist, partially-shaded, north-facing hillsides seemed to be the best places to look.
  • One surprise was that we encountered numerous specimens along many stretches of the Faulty Trail.
