Field Trip Report
East side of Sandias near Doc Long's
Saturday,
23 April 2005
We set out from the
Cienega Spring trailhead at 08:00, walked along
Faulty Trail
to Cole Spring, and returned along roughly the same route, visiting
portions of Caņoncito and Armijo Canyons on the way back.
Length and duration of the trip was 10 miles in 10 hours.
Streams were flowing vigorously in Cienega & Armijo Canyons. Between
Caņoncito and Cole Springs is a small canyon which is un-named on
maps and usually dry, but had a surprising amount of water flowing in it as
well.
The streams below Caņoncito and Cole Springs seemed to have no more
water that usual.
There were some concentrations of ascomycetes, but generally they were
spread out along a good portion of our route.
Stream beds were not significantly more productive than other areas.
Moist, partially-shaded, north-facing hillsides seemed to be the best
places to look.
One surprise was that we encountered numerous specimens along many
stretches of the Faulty Trail.
