  • Trip Report
    Details:
  • Please call or Email us if you plan to participate.
  • Reasonably well-behaved dogs are welcome. We may request that dog(s) stay on a leash.
  • We will be in the Elevation range of 7100-8600 ft (2150-2600m).
  • Map of the area we'll be exploring.
  • We will meet at the Doc Long's Parking Lot at 08:00 and again 10:00.
  • Some time after 10:00 we will drive to the Tree Spring Trailhead and explore that area.

    Conditions:

  • Mud.
  • Last Saturday, the snowline was at about 8,000 ft.
  • There should still be a good flow in the area's streams.

    Fungi:

  • The last few weeks have provided various polypores and generous fruitings of the orange jelly fungus Tremella. We're still hoping to find some snowbank fungi such as Discina, Peziza, and maybe some Caloscypha (see photos on Mycowest homepage). We may also encounter fresh fruitings of Auricularia (wood ears).

    Critters:

  • The Abert's squirrels are typically abundant in the Ponderosa habitat around Doc Long's, and we expect to see a few--if not several. We are likely to find "squirrel digs," small pits where the Abert's have been harvesting hypogeous fungi (truffles).
  • We haven't seen many birds during the last few weeks, but we've spent most of our time looking at the ground. Last Saturday's Feathered Noise Award went to a handful of Steller's Jays who seemed to be engaged in a heated political discussion.

    Equipment:

  • We strongly recommend waterproof boots.

  • Participants
    Notes:
  • This Outing is primarily a mycological field trip for NMMS members, but Mountain Club members, Friends of the Sandias, and USFS folks are welcome to join us.
