Mycological Field Trip
East side of Sandias
Sunday, 4 May, 2oo8
Contact: David
Wallis
Details:
Field Trip will begin at o9:oo
We will be in the Elevation range of 225o-265o m (74oo-87oo
ft). We
will probably spend a while around Doc Long's, then head up to the the Tree
Spring Trailhead area for some different habitat.
We will meet at the
Doc Long Picnic Area PL at 09:00.
Directions:
From the intersection of NM Hwys 14 & 536 at San Antonito,
head
west on the Sandia Crest Rd (536). The Doc Long parking lot is approx
2 mi from the intersection.
Conditions:
It will probably be quite dry.
Fungi:
Due to the Sandia's relatively dry winter and very dry spring,
it's difficult to be optimistic about encountering fungi. Nonetheless,
during this time in past years, we have encountered some Peziza, and
occasionally find snowbank fungi such as Discina and Caloscypha. We may also
encounter fresh fruitings of
Auricularia (wood ears). We expect the group would also be
delighted to chase down and capture some slime molds.
Equipment:
Sturdy footwear and plenty of drinking water.
Notes:
This Outing is primarily a mycological field trip for
Don Natvig's UNM Fungal Biology class, but we encourage
NMMS members to participate as
well.
